How to Prepare Your Lawn for Spring Mowing Season

When the snow melts and your grass starts to peek through, it’s tempting to fire up the mower and get to work. But hold on a second—your lawn needs a little TLC before you start cutting.

A good spring lawn prep routine sets the stage for healthy, even growth all season long. Here’s what to do in Kuna, ID.

1. Clear Debris and Leaves

Start with a basic cleanup. Fallen branches, dead leaves, and leftover thatch can smother your grass and invite pests. Rake it all up so your lawn can breathe and get the sunlight it needs.

Don’t skip this step—debris blocks moisture and nutrients from reaching the roots.

2. Check for Thatch

Thatch is that spongy layer of dead grass and roots between your soil and the green top layer. A little is fine. Too much (over half an inch) can stop water and fertilizer from getting where it needs to go.

Use a rake or dethatching tool to loosen it up. For larger lawns, renting a dethatcher might save time and effort.

3. Aerate if Needed

Kuna’s soil can get compacted over the winter—especially if you’ve had a lot of foot traffic. Aeration loosens things up so roots can grow deeper.

If your lawn feels hard or you see pooling water after a rain, it’s time to aerate. Punching small holes lets water, air, and nutrients in.

Check out our lawn care schedule for tips on when to aerate.

4. Sharpen Your Mower Blades

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, leaving brown tips that make your lawn look ragged. Sharpen the blade before your first mow of the season. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in how your lawn looks and heals after cutting.

5. Don’t Rush the First Cut

Hold off on mowing until your grass is tall enough—usually around 3–4 inches. Cutting too early stresses new growth.

When you do mow, follow the one-third rule: never cut more than one-third of the blade length at a time. This helps the lawn recover and reduces stress.

Final Thoughts

A little spring lawn prep goes a long way toward a lush, green yard. Clear the debris, check for thatch, aerate if needed, and make sure your mower’s ready to roll. And don’t rush it—waiting for the right height before that first cut sets you up for success.
